When ten little birds get together, it’s a feathered festival! The party would last forever, if none of the ten friends were so easily distracted.
One by one, each little bird finds something new to do. Some see other animals to play with. Some get hungry, one one stinky bird really needs a bath. Who’s going to be left in the tree at the end of the part? A spotted bird, a striped bird, or the one with purple polka dots?
Both a fun counting story and an introduction to simple classifying, Sherry Ellis’s Ten Zany Birds is an ideal read-aloud book as well as an excellent choice for developing reading skills.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I had wanted to write a counting book, but I wasn't sure exactly how it would look. Then I got a birthday invitation in the mail. On it were pictures of birds. That triggered my imagination. Wouldn't it be fun to have a counting book featuring zany birds? And that's how it got started.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The characters were a collaboration between the illustrator and me. I wanted the book to also teach kids about colors, so we needed to have birds of various colors. The illustrator sketched a bunch of different birds, and we selected the best ones for the job.
