Smiley Riley is a young girl learning about life and has a knack for finding adventures. She is smart, confident, funny, polite, caring, athletic and positive and while she is very “girly” she also likes a bit of rough-and-tumble. She was given a “lucky bracelet” by her grandmother – this bracelet apparently gives the wearer a “little help” through its four charms – for knowledge, strength, courage and love. Smiley Riley and the New Neighbor is the first reading book in the “Smiley Riley Adventure Series”. In the first book in the series, Smiley Riley meets Noodles – a young boy who has just moved into the house across the road. He and his family have a house full of animals that they have rescued from around the world. Smiley Riley and Noodles become fast friends – a small drama with Smiley Riley’s Lucky Bracelet. Smiley Riley and the New Neighbor is a great reading book for young readers – bursting with color and amazing illustrations.

How did you decide to create a trailer and what was your experience?
I decided to create a trailer to help promote my book. I felt it would create an interesting and engaging way for people to get a sense of the story and the characters – particularly via social media.
My experience was very good – we used stupeflix and it was a great process.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
My latest book is “Smiley Riley and the Mystery of the Lucky Bracelet”. This is the second book in the “Smiley Riley Adventure Series” and a continuation of the story about Smiley Riley, her lucky bracelet, her friends, her family and her adventurous nature.
The inspiration for my books is my eldest daughter – who I saw naturally develop into such a positive role model for her friends and those around her. It made me realize how important strong, positive, courageous, role models are for children – and I think especially for girls. There are more visible role models than there once were – but we need more and I think we need more in books. So it inspires me to create a role model in a book – that can help kids read, and inspire them to be great.
I grew up in Ann Arbor in Michigan, the youngest of 5 kids and obtained my Nursing degree from the University of Michigan. Once I graduated I spent 10 years working in Pediatric Intensive Care in Texas and Virginia and then I married an Australian and we moved to Australia in 2005. I continued my career in Nursing looking after critically ill kids and special needs babies before taking a break to start a family. We now have 2 lovely young daughters, and I have moved into the world of writing children’s books – with a special focus on books for girls, hoping I can create books that provide strong role models for kids in general – but in particular for girls.
So far I have written 2 books – “Smiley Riley and the New Neighbor” and “Smiley Riley and the Mystery of the Lucky Bracelet” – and I am in the process of writing my third.
