What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Mary A. Graves got the idea for her first children's book, Nora, a Neanderthal girl, while teaching Humanities in Erbil, Iraq. She had just visited nearby Shanidar cave, the location of a famous archeological dig begun the 1950s that uncovered the skeletons of ten Neanderthal men, women and children. The children in her sixth grade class had been writing their own short books on the Old Stone Age, and it made Mary think about what it would be like for a child to grow up during that time period.
