What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
The idea came about when I made a deal with my after school kids, and a 4th grade class I used to visit sometimes during lunch that if they wrote stories I'd include them in my superhero stories.
It wasn't long before I couldn't keep up and the 4th graders were asking me to come to their lunch every day because they had a story to read.
Then I got a job as a media teacher on the "lower income" side of town and I heard that many of the kids were really unmotivated and didn't even have a full google slide done after months of work. So on the first day of class I went around to each kid and had them introduce themselves and I asked them what their superpowers were.
It was absolutely amazing seeing kids that probably didn't have much regard for themselves previously light up.
I wanted to get them creating, and I was very limited on the software I was allowed to use, so they wrote stories about themselves as superheroes, used google slides to do animations of themselves as superheroes, used windows paint to digitally draw themselves as superheroes, and then they posted their work on google websites they created as a portfolio.
My hope with the book, and future books is to help inspire what I accomplished in the classroom on a community, and worldwide level.
The main aspects of the first book are to help people find their super powers, train their body (exercise, nutrition), and their minds (reading, writer, creating, dealing with negative emotions, challenging themselves, etc) and then going off into the world being superheroes by saying hi to people, helping people that are down or any other ways that they can, helping the environment by recycling and putting trash in the garbage can, mentoring others to be superheroes, and forming social groups (superhero teams).
My definition of a superhero is that a hero is someone who helps people, and a superhero is someone who helps a lot of people. Let's work together to make more superheroes.
Find your superpowers
The first step to becoming a superhero is to find your superpowers. Everyone has them. What are some things you're really good at? Those are your superpowers!
Superhero Activity #2
What are your superpowers? Write them down. If you have trouble thinking of them ask your friends and family what they think your superpowers are.
Superhero Activity #3
For fun you can draw pictures of yourself as a superhero and write stories about your superhero adventures. You could also create a superhero name, design a costume, and pick out a theme song.

My name is Michael Tomaino and I’m a teacher, coach, author and video game creator. My work has won many awards and been featured in dozens of magazines but none of that means anything compared to making a difference in a kid's life.
As a teacher I’ve had no greater reward than to be able to inspire a child. Many of the kids I've worked with have come from broken homes and to be able to help them turn their lives around is the best feeling in the world. Often times all it takes is just letting them know I am in their corner and that I care about their success.
One of my favorite experiences was that on the first day of class I would ask the kids what their superpowers were. I saw the light bulbs turn on for so many kids that had previously not wanted to do anything. They ended up creating so many stories of themselves as superheroes, animations, digital drawings, and putting all of it on websites they created.
My goal for “How To Be A Superhero” and future books is to translate my successes from the classroom to everyone in the world. Together I'm sure we can do it and make the world a better place.
