Celeste was tempted to run back down the staircase, twisting into the darkness. She didn’t have a torch of her own. It was awfully dark.
She paused, her slipper poised above the first step. Would Mama run away? Lifting her chin, she turned back to the door. “Mama wouldn’t be afraid,” she said.
“Of course Mama wouldn’t be afraid,” Jude scoffed.
The handle jiggled and the door opened. Just a crack at first, then wider, until they could see part of a wrinkled face, with one bright eye peering at them. It twinkled in the light of Jude’s torch. Wisps of gray hair stuck out over the face.
“Children?” The voice was weathered as an old broom, but still pleasant. “What on earth are the three of you doing up here? Isn’t it time for you to be in bed?”
