Ten-year-old Elvis Jones is tired of being picked on, taunted, and teased by the bullies at his elementary school, so he does what any smart, technologically brilliant kid his age would do: he creates EKHO, the Evil Kid Hunting Organization, a sophisticated network of kid spies and secret agents that utilize a variety of cool gadgets to stay one step ahead of the enemy – the bullies. They hire kids, make them swear allegiance to the organization, and train them as Commandos, Privates, and Elite Spies. As kids rise through the ranks, the missions, posted on an encrypted EKHO website, require more smarts and skill, especially when the bullies form their own counterspy group called DEKE (Destroy EKHO Kids Everywhere). It’s all in good fun, until the kids of EKHO must put their pretend skills to use for far more serious, and dangerous, missions. As field agents come across evidence of more sinister forces, they now have to deal with the strange, weird, and the unknown as they look for the truth about the bizarre and creepy threats to their school, their families, and their own lives. They experience betrayal, intrigue, infiltration and counter-espionage as well as teachers and adults who act more mysterious with each passing day, which leaves Elvis and his EKHO team wondering: who can you trust when the person standing next to you might not be entirely human?
Targeted Age Group:: Middle grade 7 – 13
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Max, my son, actually did form a spy group called EKHO when he was being bullied in grade school and much of this series is based upon the actual group, their activities, and my son’s courageous fight to stop bullying at his school, as well as the physical challenges of a disability he was going through.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The lead character is based on my son, Max, who co-wrote the book. The other characters are combinations of kids and staff that were involved with EKHO, with the exception of the more sci fi elements we added to make the story even more exciting!
Elvis couldn’t believe the boldness of these bullies, nor did he know any of them by name. Billy, Joe, and Santana were not among the group of five kids. But it didn’t matter, Elvis sensed what was about to happen, and took action.
He pushed up his sleeve to reach the spy watch he wore every day now, and messaged EKHO agents. Trouble near Pod A. Come.
Within seconds, the message was sent to Levi, Jordy, Jackson, Ronny, Kayley, and twenty-seven other kids, all of whom dashed out of classrooms and pods with the same intent.
As the bullies taunted and pushed Jody around, Elvis saw him fighting back tears. Elvis held up his watch and pressed record, videotaping the action before he stepped out from the shadows of the boy’s room wall and moved towards the group. All around them, the others were converging.
“You might not wanna do that, guys,” Elvis said, holding up his spy watch.
Behind the bullies, and out of their line of sight, the EKHO agents moved in.
“Yeah, like a dork like you is gonna stop us?” One of the boys flipped Elvis the bird.
Elvis grinned. “Oh, no, not a dork like me. A dork like … us.”
He motioned behind the bullies, who turned and saw over thirty students moving towards them, many recording the activity, all with faces firm and proud. The group strode right behind the bullies, then created a protective circle around Jody, crossing their arms and taking defiant stances as the bullies backed away.
The boy who flipped Elvis off looked as though he had seen a ghost. Thirty-two of them in fact. His face went white, as did the faces of his cohorts, and together they turned tail and ran back to class.
Jody breathed heavily and fought back tears. “What are you guys, like Super Heroes?” he asked Elvis.
“Nope, just a bunch of kids who’ve had enough. Wanna join our group?”
