What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I was always very self-conscious of my nose when I was young. Even now, I have said if I ever had plastic surgery it would be for my nose. I laugh now, but there is still an element of truth to it. I started drawing my 'big nose' character when I was 12 years old – a reflection of how I was feeling; a reflection of myself of sorts. I wrote this story for my 12 year old self – for the young girl who believed girls should have small, dainty noses. A nose does not define who you are. Dad often asked in jest, “Would you rather have a million dollars or your nose full of nickels?” Melanie always grinned and chuckled a bit, the way his glasses perched on his nose as he glanced up from the newspaper to ask her always made her smile, but as she got older the funny was starting to wear off. Maybe the nickels would be a good investment…..
