About the Book:
The Adventures of Jasmine Bunny began as a tale for my granddaughter with characters knit by me as a birthday gift for her third birthday. It is a tale about a little bunny who lives in Awbrion (an anagram of Rainbow) with all of her little forest friends. She has a brother, Jasper, who has gone off to see the world on his own adventure. During a game, she loses her hat in the river and is swept away on the current to a different land where she meets strange new friends. She learns that Jasper could be a prisoner of the evil Zargon so she decides to go after him. In this first installment of The Adventures of Jasmine Bunny, you will get to know Jasmine and her friends and become a part of her adventure as she goes off in search of her brother, Jasper.
Targeted Age Group: 3 – 10
(Story picks up in the middle of a game) And then it was Jasmine's turn. As she began to count, a sudden wind came up and blew her hat off. She began to chase it but it flew into the water. Thinking she could reach it, she waded into the water and just when she had it in her grasp, her foot slipped on a rock beneath the surface and she was swept out into the current. Before anyone could react, Jasmine was already out into the middle of the river and moving away fast. "Help!" she cried out. "I cannot swim!"
Buzz immediately jumped into the water and within minutes both of them were lost from sight.
"Oh dear!" Celeste exclaimed. "I shall fly after them and see if I can tell what is happening." And then she was off. The others all joined hands in a circle, fear etched on their little faces. They were all worried about their friends and could only hope they would return safely.
Buzz swam as fast as he could but the current was just too strong. He could not catch up to Jasmine so, with his heart saddened, he turned back to the group. He saw Celeste fly past him with a dip of her wings, letting him know she would keep going to try to find Jasmine.
When Buzz returned to his friends, everyone was overcome with grief that he had been unable to rescue Jasmine.
"Poor Jasmine," Reggie said. "I can't believe she is gone!"
"I sure hope Celeste returns with good news," Kallie replied. And with that they all bowed their heads to wait. Their fun day had turned into a sad one indeed.
As the water swept Jasmine further and further away from her friends, she was able to stay afloat by hanging on to her hat. The water was moving faster and faster and before long Jasmine noticed that the trees and flowers growing along the shore were different from those she knew and loved in Awbrion.
"Oh my," she thought, "Where am I? I have never been this far from home. I am afraid! I am not like my brother, Jasper, who travels all over the world. I have never left home and I am frightened." She was so scared that she didn't realize that she had spoken the last words out loud.
"Do not be afraid," came a booming voice from behind her. Startled, Jasmine tried to turn in the current to see who had spoken to her. A large bright green monster unlike anything she had ever seen was swimming up to her! His huge round head stuck out from a hard round shell that looked like he was carrying his house on his back.
"OHHHHH!" she cried out in alarm. "Please do not hurt me! I cannot swim and I am afraid."
The monster smiled and swam up alongside her. "I will not harm you," he said in his deep booming voice. "In fact, if you wish, you can climb up on my back and I will give you a ride."
"Thank you … but what kind of animal are you? I am a rabbit from Awbrion and I have never seen anything like you. Are you not a monster then?" Jasmine asked.
He laughed in a deep rumbling sound that echoed inside his large shell, his two strong arms sweeping the water easily aside and allowing her to climb up onto his back. "I certainly don't think I am a monster. I am a sea turtle and I am on my way back to the sea. Awbrion is very far away from here … I have never been that far up the river but I have heard of it. You are a long way from home little one. How did you happen to get this far from there?"
"Alas, my hat blew into the water and when I tried to retrieve it, I slipped on the rocks and was carried away in the current. I was sure I would drown but I was able to hold on to my hat and float along for hours that way. Can you take me back to my friends in Awbrion? They must be awfully worried about me by now."
"I wish that I could do that but that is too far inland for me. As a sea turtle, I cannot go that far from the ocean water. Perhaps when we reach the sands, someone there will be able to take you back. My name is Boomer by the way. What is yours?"
"I am Jasmine," she answered. "It's a pleasure to meet you Boomer." Jasmine climbed up to the middle of Boomer's bright green shell and with a powerful sweep of his long flipper arms, they began skimming along the surface as fast as the current. Before long Jasmine was laughing with glee. "Oh, Boomer, this is great fun!" she called out to him. "I have never experienced anything like this! It is the best ride ever!"
Boomer laughed in reply and told her to hold onto his shell and hold her breath. She instantly did as he told her and when she called out "ready" he dove beneath the surface. Jasmine's eyes opened in wonder at the amazing things she saw under the water. There were plants and fish and corals and colors brighter than anything she ever saw in Awbrion. Why it was beautiful! In a very short time, they broke the surface and she was able to take a breath.
